As the name suggests the Kodiak Island census area is actually located on the Kodiak Island, in Alaska. The entire borough area has a surface of 12,022 square miles or 31,140 square kilometers, of which more than 45% is made out of the water. While most of the surface is made by Kodiak Island's land, this borough area has several nearby islands and a fragment of the Alaska Peninsula. At the 2010 census, there were over 13,500 people living in this area. It is also worth mentioning that the Pacific Spaceport Complex is located on the island, the place from which the Athena 1 rocket was launched back in 1999.
