Also known as the Mat-Su Borough, the Matanuska-Susitna Census Area belongs to the Anchorage Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area got its name from the two rivers that run through it, the Matanuska and Susitna rivers, which empty their waters in the Cook Inlet. This is where the borough ends as well, toward the south. It is worth mentioning that this area is among the very few agricultural areas that can be found in Alaska. Spanning over an area of 25,258 square miles or 65,420 square kilometers, the Matanuska-Susitna census area has a population of almost 89,000 at the census in 2010.

The Matanuska-Susitna area is a beautiful region with mountains and glaciers. So, if you enjoy outdoor hiking, this area is definitely a good place to see. If you don't want to deal with too much snow and cold, come into the area during the summer. However, do make sure to pack some thick clothes if you plan going up the mountain, as temperatures can still be low. You can walk or bike in the state parks of the area, like the one in Talkeetna Mountains, go fishing in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, visit the museums and beautiful buildings of Wasilla or Palmer city. Because this area has some of the most accessible glaciers, hiking trips in order to visit these natural wonders are quite popular here.
